Grizzly Bears in British Columbia
This past October we took an amazing trip to British Columbia for a photography workshop at the Klahoose Wilderness Resort. Our stay included 2 days of viewing Grizzly Bears in the Toba Inlet, while they feasted on salmons to get ready for hibernation. The lodge is in the secluded Desolation Sound in British Columbia, and can only be accessed from the lodges bat, or by sea plane. It is off the grid and for the most part is self contained. The lodge is on the Klahoose First Nation territory, and many o the employees and guides are Klahoose. We experienced many of their cultural activities, in addition to amazing breakfasts, lunches, dinners and our incredible cabin.
And to add to our incredible trip, it was hosted by two ambassadors from the Canadian Geographic Society.
Our trip to the lodge started in Lund British Columbia, where we met the Klahoose water taxi. On the boat ride to the resort we were lucky to photograph groups of Sea Lions and Humpback Whales.

The morning of our first Grizzly Bear viewing, one male Grizzly came out for a short time, then disappeared back into the forest.
Our first sighting of a male Grizzly Bear
We were hoping after lunch on our first day we would be more successful. After a couple of hours waiting and photographing many of the birds in the area, a large make Grizzly appeared in the river above us.
The Grizzly on the afternoon of our first viewing day. He’s still munching on a part of a salmon
The Grizzly continued down the river and on several logs, before walking out onto the beach
This was one of the last photos I got before he laid down behind some shrubs on the beach
Another large male Grizzly appeared just after a few minutes in the morning of our second day!
He was happily eating a salmon for quite some time. As this was later in the season, only male Grizzly’s were still out eating the salmon. The females and cubs were already heading up to their winter hibernation areas.
On our third day we enjoyed more of the amazing scenery, including petroglyphs, waterfalls, Eagles, Dolphins, and more Humpback Whales!
I cannot thank the people at Klahoose Wilderness Resort enough for their hospitality and amazing food we had during our stay! I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a wilderness adventure!
